The Florida Gators have done a great job with their recruiting class after firing head coach Billy Napier.

There have been quite a few head coach firings across the landscape of college football. The LSU Tigers fired Brian Kelly, the Penn State Nittany Lions fired James Franklin, who was just hired to run the Virginia Tech Hokies after Brent Pry was fired, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys finally decided to move on from Mike Gundy.

Unlike the schools above, the Gators haven’t had a single recruit decommit from the program. In contrast, Penn State has already seen 17 players decommit.

Four-star WR Davian Groce gives Gators fans a scare

The top Gators recruit is four-star wide receiver Davian Groce from Frisco Lone Star in Texas. He is a dynamic wide receiver with dual-threat ability similar to that of former Gators star Percy Harvin. He is the highest-ranked recruit in the Gators’ 2026 class, 67th overall and 10th among wide receivers in the country, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking.

While warming up ahead of their 42-41 playoff win over Georgetown, Groce was spotted wearing gloves with the Houston Cougars logo.

As you can imagine, that’s not a good look for the Gators in regard to keeping Groce committed for the 2026 season. A devil’s advocate would say it’s not a big deal, since players warm up with different gloves all the time. Groce has been committed to the Gators since Aug. 11, and he’s currently staying put.

“I’m still committed to Florida, obviously,” Groce told Rivals on Friday. “Just really waiting to see what type of head coach they get … what type of guy they bring in and install the offense. I’ve been talking to Florida every day. They’re telling me to be patient, and that’s what I’m doing … staying patient.”

Patience will be key, especially with all of the drama surrounding Lane Kiffin. If it does end up being Kiffin, his patience will be rewarded, as his offense would allow Groce to thrive.

“It’s the Florida Gators. I feel like anybody they bring in will be worth hearing them out,” he said. “We’re talking about the Florida Gators, one of the greatest teams in college football for a while. I’m trusting them. I have a good relationship with everybody there, from the top to the bottom. I trust those guys 100 percent.”

It would also help if whoever gets hired keeps interim head coach Billy Gonzales as their wide receivers coach. He’s already coached under three different head coaches at Florida and was the key recruiter to land Groce.

Early signing day is Dec. 3, and the Gators holding onto Groce will be massive for next year and the future, especially since his ability pairs really well with that of Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown III.
