The Florida Gators have done a relatively solid job recruiting over Head Coach Billy Napier's tenure. They finished seventh in the 2025 recruiting cycle after landing four-star cornerback J'Vari Flowers and have a lot of irons in the fire for the 2026 class.
However, it hasn't all been sunshine and rainbows for Napier. One of his biggest coups recruiting was landing 2023 four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada. He ultimately asked for a released from his letter of intent
Jaden Rashada lawsuit with Florida Gators moving to discovery
Rashada ended up filing a lawsuit against Napier, Florida booster Hugh Hathcock, and former director of player engagement and NIL Marcus Castro-Walker. His claims of conspiracy to commit fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation and inducement, and negligent misrepresentation have moved to discovery and will go to trial.
The judge of the case, M. Casey Rodgers, had this to say about the lawsuit.
“Hathcock allegedly boasted to Castro-Walker, within earshot of Rashada and his family, that he would deliver whatever NIL compensation package was needed to secure Rashada’s commitment to UF,” Rodgers wrote in her ruling. “And while Hathcock and Castro-Walker were in the thick of the initial negotiations with Rashada’s agents, Hathcock allegedly said that he ‘just listen[ed] to’ whatever Napier and Castro-Walker told him to do.
“Napier’s putative actions, in concert with the surrounding circumstances alleged in the Amended Complaint, at the very least created a plausible appearance that Castro-Walker and Hathcock were acting as Rashada’s apparent agents during his recruitment to UF.”
It was quite the situation with Rashada. He was debating between both Miami and Florida for his commitment, eventually flipping to the Gators. He signed a massive NIL deal worth over $13 million, but the entire basis of the lawsuit is that the Gators "reneged" on the deal, which put Rashada in a tough place. He ended up transferring to Arizona State where he got some playing time as a true freshman and was at Georgia last season. He is currently in the transfer portal.
This is a big deal for the Gators, as a judgment against the program could be devastating to the football program from multiple angles. We will keep you updated as things progress.
