Florida State, a very prestigious football program, cannot afford to have another two-win season. That just cannot happen, because there is too much invested in the program for that to be okay.

It would be much different if this were the basketball program we are talking about here, because that program isn’t as known as the football one is, with not as much history. 2024, where head coach Mike Norvell won just two games, was the worst season since the mid-1970s. That just goes to show you how consistently good this program has been for so long.

They have to get back to the top, and they definitely have to get back to competing. The good news is, they did just that a few years ago, with an undefeated season and a (should have been) College Football Playoff appearance. So, it’s possible, and it’s definitely possible with this head coach.

The importance of this 2025 season cannot be understated, and that’s why you have coaches at practice calling out guys who aren’t doing things the right way.

Florida State DC Tony White calls out players

This defense was not great last year, but then again, neither side of the ball was very good. The Seminoles were pathetic on defense, missing tackles too often, and just not finishing plays.

I can tell you one thing — this version of the Seminoles will not be like that.

“There are some guys who showed out, guys who are building the coaches’ trust and the confidence of their teammates, and there are some guys who need to, quite frankly, step their ass up,” defensive coordinator Tony White told reporters on-site on Monday. “It’s unacceptable… I never get upset when the ball beats you. But if you’re not doing what you’re being trained to do, and you’re not playing your butt off, then that is unacceptable. That is not right.”

White is not a guy the players want to make mad. He’s not one of those guys who will love on you and tell you everything is going to be alright, and frankly, after a two-win season, the Seminoles can’t have that on their defense. They need a mean coach who is going to tell it like it is because he truly cares about every single individual getting better.

The Seminoles are set to play Alabama to kick off their season, who come in as the No. 8 team in the preseason AP Poll. That game will not be easy, and if the Seminoles come out with some guys who just don’t play hard and don’t care, they will lose by 70 points.

Winning that game would do wonders when it comes to putting the Seminoles back on the map. But you have to want it.
