Carson Beck had been playing the worst football of his collegiate career heading into the Tennessee game this week, but he did not let that get him down. Beck just kept his head up, focused, and inevitably led his offense to their most important win of the 2024 college football season. What was the secret that unlocked him? The source(s) of Beck's newfound success might surprise.
Beck was directly asked following the 31-17 Georgia victory over Tennessee about how he got the best version of himself in tonight's game, and his response was that of a strong leader:
"First and foremost, I'm so thankful for this team. I'm thankful for the way that we fight and stay composed. We're resilient…I'm just so thankful for the opportunity to get to lead these guys. And for me, when I just play for them, that's the best version of myself."
When Carson Beck plays for his teammates, he says that makes the him the best version of himself, and it sure looked like that was the case. Carson Beck tossed the rock 40 times for 346 yards, two touchdowns, and the most important stat of all for him recently: zero interceptions.
Beck had thrown nine interceptions in the previous four games alone, struggling to find a rhythm. That unfortunate streak of turnovers is now over. But it was more than just playing for his teammates that helped him get his groove back. As Beck continued to share on the field and in his post-game interview, he finally just focused on having fun for once:
"I think the work of it all, you get caught up in that. I stood up in front of the team, and I told them, man let's just go have fun. Just let it loose. We don't have anything to lose at this point. We've dropped a couple games. It is what it is. But that doesn't matter. We control our destiny. We control our future. Have juice. Come into this game and have fun. Play for each other."
Beck mentioned that following last season's game against Florida State the team took two weeks off, but since then it's been back to work nonstop. It seems that he had gotten stuck thinking of the "work of it all", forgetting that this is a game meant to be enjoyed. Beck spoke to the team this past week, as he does frequently, and made sure that this week he and his teammates had fresh perspective, and it worked.
Beck finally connected consistently with not one, not two, but three of his tight ends in Lawson Luckie, Oscar Delp, and Ben Yurosek. He found consistency with several playmakers all game long. Between his three tight ends, Beck spread 10 receptions, 129 yards, and two touchdowns on the night, including this beautiful big-time NFL throw to Oscar Delp:
Beck was calm, comfortable, and under control for the entire game. He took zero sacks, averaged 11.4 yards downfield on his targets (2.5 yards further than his season average), and posted his highest total yardage mark since the Mississippi State game. And this was his only game on the year where he threw for 300+ yards and zero interceptions. He slinging it with confidence.
Kirby Smart spoke on Carson Beck's special play after the game, sharing how unsurprised he was by it all, because he sees him work and perform at a high level every day:
"I've been very consistent, even with some of the dumbest questions in the world–no offense–about our quarterback because we see him every day. He gets judged on outcomes and stats, but we don't judge based on that. We judge based internally on what gives us the best chance to win. I'm never going to falter over what I see with my eyes. And what I see with my eyes is a guy that is really good in the pocket and he's got poise. He's got composure. He puts us in the right play over and over again and makes good decisions."
Kirby Smart has been consistent all year long that Beck has been playing well, getting the team in the right plays, and converting in key moments. However, this week did feel quite a bit different. And based on what Beck said in his post-game media scrum interview after the game, it seems even Kirby Smart embraced the fun this week, as he installed some designed run plays for Beck for basically the first time ever:
"We had a couple plays where they were designed quarterback runs which I don't know if we've ever run for me, like ever. So I was kind of excited coming into the week because when I was in high school I was a dual threat…I kept telling coach that I was a dual threat, and that I could run if he needs me to. He doesn't ever let me run, but he let me run tonight."
It's funny to hear Carson Beck call himself a "dual threat" quarterback, but that's exactly what he was against Tennessee on Saturday, racking up over 30 yards on the ground. Beck couldn't help but smile talking about excited he was to show off his legs on in the matchup.
Georgia might just have turned a corner at the perfect time as they approach the post-season. With two weeks remaining the Bulldogs now finish SEC Conference play by thrashing a top ten team in the nation, likely pushing them back into the College Football Playoff bracket. They get to play UMass and Georgia Tech in their final two games, which should both be easy wins.
Unfortunately, Alabama and/or Texas has to lose to put Georgia back in position to make the SEC Championship game, but the Bulldogs likely don't even need to prove themselves there to make the playoff. Instead, Smart's squad can just focus on getting fully healthy and prepare to make another push towards a national championship. And now it finally looks like their quarterback Carson Beck is ready for it.
