Georgia Bulldogs screwed out of No. 2 seed, but now have easiest path to title game in the College Football Playoff bracket
Kirby Smart and Georgia somehow ranked behind Ohio State Buckeyes, but now face extremely easy playoff path
The Georgia Bulldogs won the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, but that apparently wasn’t enough for the College Football Playoff committee to move them ahead of the Indiana Hoosiers or the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Yes, they still landed with the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, but the SEC Champion landing behind the Big Ten runner-up is a slap in the face. However, Georgia’s getting screwed out of the No. 2 seed actually ended up helping hand them the easiest path to the title game in the College Football Playoff bracket.
Georgia Bulldogs screwed out of higher seed, but it actually helps them
The College Football Playoff committee is a complete and utter joke, but sometimes that helps certain teams. Alabama absolutely should not have made it into the bracket after getting obliterated by Georgia Saturday, with Notre Dame and Miami sitting right there behind them. Miami might have deserved the No. 10 seed, but it definitely should not have jumped Notre Dame with both those teams not playing this past week.
As all this pertains to Georgia, the Bulldogs 100% should have ranked above the Ohio State Buckeyes after they lost the Big Ten Championship and Georgia won the SEC Championship. Apparently, conference championships are just exhibitions, according to the playoff committee. However, there’s good news. Georgia now has an extremely easy playoff path.
As the No. 3 seed, Georgia will rest on a bye to open the College Football Playoff. It’ll then face off against the winner of Ole Miss and Tulane. The Rebels already destroyed Tulane once this year, so it’s likely an Ole Miss vs. Georgia rematch. And this time, Lane Kiffin won’t be there to help his team make it a close game.
That gifts Georgia a near auto-bid to the semifinal round, where it will play either Ohio State, Texas A&M, or Miami. All three of those teams will likely have a much tougher time just getting to the semifinals, potentially coming in exhausted and/or banged up from tighter game(s).
Every path to a national championship in College Football is difficult, but this is the second year in a row that the No. 3 seed section of the 12-team playoff bracket possesses the easiest run to the semifinals. Last year, Penn State faced an SMU team with clear talent edges up and down the roster.
Then they got to play the Group of Five conference representative in Boise State. This year, Georgia will face either a Group of Five team that doesn’t deserve to be in to begin with, in Tulane, or an Ole Miss team that just lost key staff members a week ago. Things could not have gone better for Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs. They’ll just have to likely take care of business against Ohio State in the semis, and then they could find themselves back in the title game.
