It's official.
Georgia Bulldogs starting quarterback Carson Beck will miss the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, On3's Pete Nakos reports.
Nakos adds that Beck did not return to practice and workouts with the team late last week.
Beck was injured during Georgia's SEC Championship win over Texas earlier this month when he took a hit from behind while in throwing motion. Beck is now dealing with a UCL injury to his right elbow, though the severity of the torn ligament is unclear and he is said to be currently weighing his treatment options.
That means it's time for redshirt sophomore backup quarterback Gunner Stockton to take center stage and win the hearts of Bulldogs fans early.
Fans caught a glimpse of Stockton during the conference championship when he took over after halftime and completed 12 of his 16 pass attempts for 71 yards and an interception.
Georgia is scheduled to face the winner of Indiana vs. Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 in New Orleans.
The bowl game will mark Stockton's first college start for the Bulldogs, who are very confident in what he brings to the table.
“There’s not a game we don’t go into that we don’t have a plan for Gunner if he were to have to play,” head coach Kirby Smart said following the SEC Championship. “I mean, when he’s your backup quarterback, he’s got to be ready to play, but he functions and operates really well within our current offense. We don’t think we have to change much in terms of that. He does give us the capability of doing some different things with his athleticism…
“…The team has a lot of confidence in Gunner. He’s very smart, very intelligent. So I don’t know that it’s a lot of change. It’s probably more picking the volume correctly in terms of not having everything that we have with Carson, but having things that fit Gunner.”
Stockton, a former four-star prospect from Tiger, GA, completed 25 of 32 passes for 206 yards in three games for Georgia during the regular season.
