With playoffs and bowl season fully underway, the NCAA transfer portal is in full swing and already nearing the end. It’s created madness across college football, and we have already seen a long list of talented members find new homes. That includes former Kentucky star wide receiver Dane Key who announced his commitment to Nebraska this week.
The Key transfer to Nebraska did take some by surprise this week. It wasn’t too long ago that Georgia was viewed as the potential front runner, and there was even a predilection for him to end up with the Bulldogs from a prominent analyst. The Cornhuskers were always involved, and got the deal done in the end.
Key has quietly been tremendous for Kentucky since he joined the program. In three seasons, he has hauled in 126 receptions for 1,870 yards and 14 touchdowns. The talented pass catcher hasn’t had a single season less than 519 yards. He has been ultra consistent.
For Nebraska, this is a big get to continue to put talent around true freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola. Both Isaiah Neyor and Jahmal Banks will be gone after this season, and there is a need for a known commodity. Key brings that presence as soon as he steps foot on campus.
On the Georgia side, they will be losing both Arian Smith and Dominic Lovett this offseason, who are their two top pass catchers. They have combined for 103 receptions for 1,321 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall. Finding added depth to that room has been a priority so far, and unfortunately they missed on Key.
