Exactly who would help replace Brock Bowers' production in the tight end room was a major question mark heading into the Georgia Bulldogs' 2024 season.
Five weeks in, the Dawgs might have an answer — and it's not who many thought it might be.
Sophomore tight end Lawson Luckie currently leads Georgia's tight ends with 6 catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Ahead of Georgia's Week 6 home matchup against the Auburn Tigers, head coach Kirby Smart had some high remarks for the former four-star recruit from Norcross, GA.
"Versatility, athleticism," Smart said. "He’s really a tough guy. I mean, he’s physically tough. He’s not afraid to get after it. But he’s also a good pass receiver. I mean, you say, what has he brought, he’s brought the versatility to run or pass. He’s getting better. He’s still young in my eyes. Most times your second year in college, you’re just starting to come out of your shell. He missed a lot of time last year for the injury. If you think back, I think it was this game that he was just coming back in with a TightRope. So you’re a year removed from that."
While Smart made it clear that Luckie has room for improvement, he hinted that the young tight end has all of the tools to be one of the best at Georgia.
"This sky is the limit, Lawson can be really good. He keeps getting better. I like his confidence and I like his leadership and his mindset. He’s got a toughness mindset."
Luckie may not be on the same path as Bowers once was, however, he is en route for a breakout year if he keeps it up.
