Georgia Bulldogs safety Dan Jackson and Star nickel Joenel Aguero were both ejected for targeting late in the team's 30-15 win over the Texas Longhorns last week.
In the fourth quarter, Jackson lowered his head and appeared to hit Longhorns wide receiver Matthew Golden's helmet while Aguero got called for a hit on running back Quintrevion Wisner.
Head coach Kirby Smart admitted on Tuesday that both were really close calls.
"I can't get into the commentary, but both of those were really close, unfortunate borderline situations," Smart said. "One came from an offensive player lowering his head and Dan mirrored it. And then Joenel's is really tough. He's trying to avoid helmet-to-helmet. He's trying to avoid going high which most NFL offensive players would rather you hit them high than hit them low because their legs are their careers. They're tough calls in both situations. Everybody's trying to work on the safety of the game. That's the focal point."
As a result, both players are expected to face suspension and sit out the first half of the Florida game on Nov. 2 following Georgia's bye week.
However, there is a chance they could be available pending an appeals process, which Smart hinted at but refused to go into detail about.
"I'll be honest with you, I'd rather not talk about it," Smart said. "So I mean, it's one of those things that I don't really know the process, to be honest with you. So, we'll see how it goes."
Jackson has played in all six games and is second on the team with 37 tackles, an interception, one fumble recovery, and a blocked field goal.
Aguero, who has also seen action in every game this season, ranks eighth on Georgia's defense with 19 tackles, 1 1/2 tackles for loss, and a QB hit.
Jackson and Aguero were two key reasons as to why Georgia's defense shut down Texas last Saturday and their potential absence would leave the Bulldogs very thin in their secondary.
