There wasn’t a ton of belief in Gunner Stockton taking over the starting quarterback job for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Even some Bulldogs fans were skeptical.

However, head coach Kirby Smart never doubted him, and much of that uncertainty coming from the outside noise was put to rest after Stockton led Georgia to a 44-41 overtime win over the Tennessee Volunteers in his first SEC road start

“He’s so tough. I mean, he takes shot after shot. You know, I thought he did a good job with the run game — I’m talking about his run game,” Smart said of Stockton after the win. “He saved us on a couple of third downs. IN the red area he made a couple runs. That plus-one run game can be big for us if he can protect himself. I thought he grew up tonight. He grew up a lot. He stood it in there. The fourth-down throw that he made was really good. Protection was better.

“I still want him to trust the pocket and stay in there, but, you know, that’s who he is. I think we’re going to evolve with him where we can scramble and make some really big-time plays if he’ll keep his eyes downfield when he scrambles.”

Stockton completed 23-of-31 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in the win. He also rushed for one more score. It was a perfect mix of his dual-threat abilities.

Stockton’s teammate and defensive star, KJ Bolden, couldn’t have summed up any better what he and the rest of the country witnessed from Georgia’s QB1 in the thrilling win.

“He’s a Dawg,” Bolden said.
