Kirby Smart addresses Georgia’s offensive line injuries as Bulldogs prepare for first SEC showdown vs Tennessee
A positive update!
Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart isn’t ruling out two of his starters on the offensive line against the Tennessee Volunteers just yet.
During Wednesday’s SEC media call ahead of their first SEC showdown on the road, Smart addressed the injuries to right tackle Earnest Greene and right guard Juan Gaston, noting they both looked good at practice this week.
“Well, this is not a game that you want somebody that’s not 100% healthy out there playing. It’s going to be physical, it’s going to be quick, it’s going to be violent. I mean, all that are but this one really is going to be that way. They play with really big, physical guys up front. You need all the power you can get. You need all the stamina you can get.
“But both of those guys showed good progress yesterday. I really liked the way both of them looked. I liked the reps they took. They’ll take more reps today, and just see where they are. We got to make a good judgment. And you know, today and tomorrow are physical days for us, so we still get accurate, and we’ll find out where they are.”
Greene and Gaston both left Georgia’s season-opener against the Marshall Thundering Herd with injuries. Gatson went down with an ankle injury, while Green left the game early due to stiffness in his lower body.
Then neither Greene nor Gaston played in the Bulldogs’ Week 2 win over Austin Peay.
Georgia Will Play it Safe With OL Injuries
While Smart hopes to see both out there on Saturday, Georgia won’t rush them back from an injury if they’re not 100 percent, especially against a stout defense like Tennessee’s.
“Well, this is not a game that you want somebody that’s not 100 percent healthy out there playing,” Smart said. “It’s going to be physical. It’s going to be quick, it’s going to be violent. All SEC games are, but this one really is going to be that way. They play with really big, physical guys up front. You need all the power you can get. You need all the stamina you can get.”
In place of Greene, Jahzare Jackson got the start at right tackle against Austin Peay. Meanwhile, Michael Uini replaced Gaston at right guard. Dontrell Glover and Bo Hughley also stepped up.
