Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have been pushing hard to land Jared Curtis, the top quarterback in the nation, for years now. He was committed to play in Athens for quite some time, but decommitted last October. Since then the battle for Curtis has been all Oregon Ducks versus Georgia Bulldogs. But now, just a month before his commitment date, it's looking like there's a good chance Curtis may be headed out west.
If Curtis does end up committing to Oregon that might trigger the absolute worst case scenario for Georgia's recruiting efforts in 2026. Why? Let's dive in.
Worst Case QB Recruiting Scenario for Georgia
First off, in case you missed the news, Jared Curtis was planning on taking a visit to Georgia this upcoming weekend, but opted out to attend his prom instead. That might seem rather innocuous on the surface, but that's the kind of event he would have known about for a long time. He could have made different visit plans with Georgia. And according to Graham Coffey of Dawgs Central, Curtis might be done with visits now as he's set to commit on May 5th.
Perhaps Curtis just doesn't need to take anymore visits with Georgia because he's already made up his mind in favor of the Bulldogs. Or he already knows he's going to Oregon since the momentum there has ben clearly building for months. Georgia fans better hope it's the former, because the backup plans at quarterback are beginning to fall through too.
Kirby Smart and his staff have been pursuing both Bowe Bentley (highly rated four star from Texas) and Landon Duckworth (a 7-on-7 phenom from Alabama) alongside their Curtis efforts just in case they do miss out on the five star stud. Unfortunately, both quarterbacks look like they're trending elsewhere already too.
Bowe Bentley narrowed his search down a top three that includes Georgia, Oklahoma, and LSU–which sounds good for the Bulldogs on the surface. However, with a new offensive coordinator at Oklahoma pursuing Bentley as "his guy" over their current commit, and the surge from LSU going all in on him this spring, there's a great chance he lands with one of them instead. In fact, Landon Duckworth was just predicted to land with Ole Miss via multiple experts (including On3's Steve Wiltfong) this week already.
Nobody wants to be a college football program's "backup plan" if they don't get their first choice. Both Bentley and Duckworth are exactly that to Georgia. Conversely, they have been "number one" for the programs pushing for them hardest this spring.
If Georgia misses out on all three quarterbacks somehow, that will leave them likely competing for a a couple middling three star quarterback talents as their best options for the 2026 recruiting class. Not great. And as we have seen in the past at a number of other programs, when a quarterback leaves or frankly just isn't the centerpiece of a recruiting class, things can quickly crumble in other key recruiting battles. If this worst case scenario plays out, Georgia fans might need to brace themselves for the worst recruiting class of Kirby Smart's tenure.
