The Georgia Bulldogs did exactly what they were supposed to on Saturday, destroying Charlotte 35-3, but that wasn’t the main story that came out of the game. Kirby Smart and company rested some key players who are still recovering from injury and a handful of freshman starred amid the thrashing of the 49ers. After the game, coach Smart couldn’t help but praise some of his young playmakers and provided some much-needed clarity on some key injury situations.

Kirby Smart offers injury updates as Georgia tries to get healthy for playoff

Georgia has been without several key playmakers on both sides of the ball here recently with CJ Allen (LB), Colbie Young (WR), Drew Bobo (C), and more sidelined. Coach Smart didn’t offer any hopeful immediate updates for Allen and Young, but Drew Bobo and a couple others sound like they’re progressing well:

“Drew [Bobo] is still dealing with a laceration in his hand that’s created some problems for us that we’re trying to him healthy from. And Earnest [Greene] should be back…[Talyn Taylor] is making good progress. He’s been through this before and he’s progressing well.”

It seems that Bobo and Greene both could have possibly played this week, but the team is obviously playing it safe with their star center and right tackle as Georgia tries to get healthy ahead of the College Football Playoff. Greene has already missed significant time this season, so keeping him out in a game where Georgia was favored by more than four scores was an easy decision. Fans will love to see Talyn Taylor back in the mix too, but keeping the core of the offensive line as healthy as possible is obviously the team’s top health priority at the moment.

Kirby Smart praises Georgia Bulldogs freshman performances in easy Charlotte win

Thanks to the massive talent discrepancy between Georgia and Charlotte, Kirby Smart made sure to get a bunch of his seniors and freshman in the mix who have been practicing hard all year, but haven’t seen a ton of action. When asked about some of his young playmakers after the game, Kirby Smart was excited about two of them in particular:

“It’s great, man. [Bo Walker] has been working his tail off every week. He’s starting on two special teams units. He never complains. He’s got a smile on his face every day. Love the way he competes and works. He’s still got to grow and get better at some things, but he catches the ball out of the back field well. He blocks well, and he’s got good vision. I thought they opened some things up and he made some people miss…Elijah [Griffin] is growing up. He’s playing faster. I think confidence — I think he would tell you there was some anxiety there early in games and he’s grown out of that. He’s getting more and more confident. We need him to continue to grow and get better and play like he’s capable of. He’s capable of being a dominant player and we need him to get better and grow up fast.”

Bo Walker scored three rushing touchdowns on the day on his nine carries for 48 yards on Saturday. His athleticism popped on every single snap as he seemed to be playing like each play could be his last for the Georgia Bulldogs. It’s great to see that Georgia’s running back stable runs even deeper than we may have even thought.

Elijah Griffin, a highly touted five star defensive line recruit, finally tallied his first sack of the season and looked far more comfortable than he has in several weeks, dominating up front against Charlotte. Fans expected a bit more from him as a true freshman, but it’s clear that Kirby Smart has seen his growth taking place. He’ll need to step up even more so in the playoff if Georgia wants to have their best shot at a championship.
