Kirby Smart raves about underrated weapons who gave Georgia Bulldogs the victory over Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss Rebels
Dillon Bell and Lawson Luckie step up with huge crucial plays in win over Ole Miss
The Georgia Bulldogs pulled off a miraculous comeback win again. Kirby Smart’s 2025 Bulldogs have their glaring flaws, but they just keep finding ways to win. And it’s not always the same players coming through, making the plays that win the game either.
Gunner Stockton did play well once again. The running back stable of Nate Frazier, Chauncey Bowens, and Josh McCray did their part. However, it was two underrated offensive weapons that came through in critical moments leading the Georgia Bulldogs to victory on Saturday, and Kirby Smart had to give credit where it was due following the game.
Key Stats from Dillon Bell and Lawson Luckie for Georgia
- Lawson Luckie caught five receptions for 43 yards and three touchdowns in Georgia’s win over the Ole Miss Rebels, more than matching his season total in every production category
- Dillon Bell averaged 19 yards per touch on his 76 yards against Ole Miss, including his phenomenal 36-yard reception that set up what became the game-sealing field goal
- Dillon Bell only has 20 touches on the season, but they’ve come at critical moments as he’s averaging over 10 yards per touch, splitting time between both wide receiver and a runner for Georgia’s offense
Two underrated Georgia Bulldogs won the day against Ole Miss
Kirby Smart always loves bragging on his players who work hard, put their head down, and no matter what their role, earn his respect. That description fits both wide receiver Dillon Bell and Lawson Luckie perfectly. Smart has already bragged on Bell following a few key plays earlier this season. This time he was bragging on both Bell and Luckie as they came up big time on Saturday. Luckie with three receiving touchdowns. Bell with what would become the game-sealing deep reception because of the field goal it set up for the Bulldogs. Kirby was pumped:
“This guy [Lawson Luckie] man. He speaks up in every meeting. He loves the place. His dad played here. He never complains. He doesn’t gripe. He just keeps working. He’s got some of the best toughness in our program. Never complains. He probably statistically wasn’t having the year he wanted to have, but he never pouted. What about Dillon Bell. That play Dillon Bell makes probably broke the game. It changed the field position, put us in milk mode, put us in what we’re really good at–four minute offense, chew up the clock. That play Gunner [Stockton] and Dillon [Bell] makes and Lawson’s three touchdowns were really big part of the second half.”
Bell’s reception may have been the play of the entire game. It was just a simple go route, but Bell stacked his defender, fought off what was clearly defensive pass interference, and he popped of the holding cornerback with late hands for the 36-yard reception. That one play flipped the field with four and a half minutes to go. A few plays later the Bulldogs extended their lead to eight.
Tight end Lawson Luckie scored two of Georgia’s final three touchdowns late in the game as he posted a career game for the Bulldogs. Luckie only had five catches for 38 yards and zero touchdowns prior to the Ole Miss game. He snagged five receptions for 43 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s game.
Luckie was moving smooth, strong, and showcased clutch hands all game long. If Gunner Stockton now has yet another solid receiving talent to trust, the Georgia offense might be able to take their game to another level.
The Georgia Bulldogs still need to fix their pass rush. They can’t give up five straight touchdowns like they did. But it’s nice to see different players continuing to step up right when Kirby Smart and company needs them. If Georgia continues adding trustworthy layers to their offense they’re going to be a tough team to beat by the postseason.
