Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs lost their Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff matchup 23-10 on Thursday in what was a massive disappointment for fans. It wasn't a complete surprise as star quarterback Carson Beck sat out due to injury and his inexperienced backup Gunner Stockton was asked to save the day once again. But that doesn't really change how bad it stings to lose for Georgia.
After the game Kirby Smart said exactly what many Georgia fans were thinking when it came to the critical reasons the Bulldogs lost. Too many "self-imposed wounds" as Coach Smart called them:
"We turned the ball over and they didn't…When you have two turnovers and a kickoff return for a touchdown that's what happens…And the turnovers were the difference in the game, guys. It's not an exact science. You should know, when you turn it over twice and they return a kickoff for a touchdown you're not going to have a lot of success…Yeah, [that sideline interference penalty] was very unfortunate. We had a player in the white which is reserved for the officials. That's a safety concern. Most of the time they'll give you a warning, but it cost us 15 yards…I call those things undisciplined. Self-imposed wounds that make you lose momentum. So it's just something you can't have happen."
The fumbles were the biggest killer of the game. Georgia's defense played phenomenal football all game long, giving up just around four yards per play. Unfortunately, Gunner Stockton and the offense coughed up a couple fumbles, this strip sack in Georgia territory included as you can see in the post below.
As Smart said, you just can't lose the turnover battle and expect to have success. But then of course Georgia's dumb mistakes weren't done there with just the fumbles.
Parker Jones, a walk-on for Georgia, got too excited and collided with a referee in the white area along the sideline amid a 67-yard reception by wide receiver Arian Smith. It was an incredible play, but the sideline interference penalty cost Georgia 15 yards, killing any potential momentum gained from a huge throw from Gunner Stockton.
Just when Georgia fans thought they might be able to get a stop to start the second half to work their way back in the game, the worst possible thing happened. Notre Dame's Jayden Harrison returned a 98-yard kickoff return for a score.
Several Bulldogs players were in position to make a play, but just couldn't corral Harrison. That extended Notre Dame's lead to 20-3, putting the game out of reach for Georgia's sputtering inconsistent offense.
Obviously Georgia fans are disappointed. Kirby Smart was disappointed. The players hated the outcome. But the game truly did just come down to the turnovers and dumb mistakes.
Georgia completely destroyed Notre Dame's offense for nearly the entire game. Their offense was actually more efficient on a per play basis. The Bulldogs gained more total yards. The talent of Georgia's roster was evident throughout. The mistakes just piled up too high for the team to overcome.
It was largely a successful season for Georgia overall, but it is sad to see them fall short fighting hard with a backup quarterback at the helm. They'll be back in the 2025 College Football Playoff again next year.
Kirby Smart was clearly in denial with Gunner Stockton as Georgia loses in College Football Playoff
Kirby Smart didn’t want to accept harsh reality
