Kirby Smart weighs in on Georgia Bulldogs injuries following crushing win over Marshall
Could be worse.
The Georgia Bulldogs are a little banged up following their 45-7 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday.
Starting right guard Juan Gaston and starting right tackle Earnest Greene exited the victory early due to injuries, and head coach Kirby Smart had some updates for reporters after the game.
According to Smart, Gatson went down with an ankle injury, though the team is unsure just how serious it is at the moment.
“Don’t know much,” Smart said. “We took him to an MRI. It looks like an ankle or a knot, in terms of that. He’s being checked out right now.”
Gaston, a true freshman, was announced as one of the Bulldogs’ starters ahead of Saturday’s kickoff. He became the first true freshman to start Game 1 for Georgia under Kirby Smart since offensive tackle Andrew Thomas in 2017.
With Gatson out, Daniel Calhoun and Michael Uini took turns taking reps at right guard.
Meanwhile, Greene dealt with stiffness in his lower body, causing him to leave the game.
“Earnest was dealing with a little bit of lower-body stiffness and was not able to go,” Smart said. “Bo Hughley stepped in there and did some good things.”
Bo Hughley stepped in at right tackle in Greene’s absence.
“I thought Bo filled in great,” Smart said. “I have to watch the tape to evaluate it. Ernest was doing a little bit of lower body stiffness and wasn’t able to go. So Bo jumped in there and did some good things.”
Georgia’s starting cornerback Daylen Everette is also dealing with an injury. Everette suited up and warmed up before the game, but did not play a single snap.
“Yeah, he’s injured,” Smart confirmed after the game without revealing any other details.
