The Ole Miss Rebels’ legendary 2025 season run may be over, but new head coach Pete Golding and his staff are making sure that they’re already reloaded for another special year in 2026.

The Rebels have quickly added 11 high-level, immediate-impact transfers via the transfer portal. Now they’ve landed the perfect defensive piece that should help hold the entire defense together, hopefully improving Ole Miss’ greatest weaknesses that cost them against Miami.

Ole Miss lands defensive back Joenel Aguero from Georgia Bulldogs

The biggest problem with Ole Miss’ entire team was their run defense. More specifically, it was often their tackling at the second and third levels that cost them explosive plays. It also led to the team’s inability to stop opposing rush success rates and conversions on critical downs.

That problem was hidden by the Rebels’ elite offense all year, but reared its ugly face against Miami in the College Football Playoff loss.

The answer? Sign physical, athletic, dominant linebackers and defensive backs via the transfer portal. Golding and his staff had already brought in two proven linebackers (Keaton Thomas of Baylor and Chris Jones of Southern Miss) and a box safety (Edwin Joseph of Florida State) to help fix his team’s defensive woes. Now he’s signed the final perfect piece in versatile defensive back Joenel Aguero from the Georgia Bulldogs.

What Joenel Aguero should bring to Ole Miss Rebels’ defense

Aguero is a former five-star defensive back recruit who earned a decent role with the Georgia Bulldogs from a very young age. He was a bit inconsistent early on in run defense, but he took his game to a whole new level this past season.

Aguero played his best football from the slot but was also effective as a chess piece, lining up across the defensive formation last season. He racked up 40 tackles, made an interception, defended several passes, and only allowed 8.8 yards per catch in coverage last season. His 8.8 yards per reception allowed is most often what you see from great linebackers who play close to the line of scrimmage all day, not defensive backs who cover the entire field with range.

Aguero is just a special defender who keeps everything in front of him, defending the run and pass.

Aguero has the athleticism, strength, and motor to play every single down. A third of his tackles stopped opponents in their tracks for a negative or neutral play. He only allowed three receptions of 20+ yards on the entire season in 2025.

Is he absolutely perfect? No, but he brings three years of experience, solid run defense, discipline, and should be the anchor of Golding’s defense, able to lurk around the entire formation. Landing Aguero is a huge win that puts the finishing touches on the 2026 Ole Miss defense.
