In the SEC, victories are tough to come by. They're even more difficult when you're playing a tough opponent on the road. Sometimes the difference is just digging deep, playing tough, and–as was the theme this week for Georgia–taking the game blow by blow, pushing through until your opponent finally breaks.
That's exactly what Trevor Etienne did on Saturday in Georgia's tight 13-12 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats. Etienne suffered a shoulder injury early in the game, forcing him to the sidelines for a good portion of the contest. But late in the second half when Georgia absolute just had to have a drive where they found the end zone Etienne stepped up, fighting through his injury, and racked up 50 total yards on just one drive.
Georgia had just kicked a field goal, bringing their points deficit to just three points, trailing Kentucky 6-9. The Bulldogs' elite defense shut Kentucky down for a quick three and out and Etienne knew it was his time. And apparently so did Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo (the offensive coordinator).
Georgia dialed up a half dozen runs to Etienne on the drive and he delivered. Etienne tallied carries of 12, 11, 8, and 17 yards on the drive to get Georgia right up against Kentucky's goal line. And although he wasn't the running back who scored the go-ahead touchdown (that was Branson Robinson), it was clear he was the hero, dominating that entire incredible drive late in the game.
It may just be one drive. But that toughness, intensity, and elite playmaking ability just set the standard for the rest of Georgia's football season. All 100+ of his teammates are going to watch Etienne's film this week and know that he was all-in with every step he took that drive.
If Kirby Smart can get the entire roster to push through the pain, and win for each other the way that Etienne did on the most important drive of the game against Kentucky? No one's beating Georgia the rest of the way.
Georgia QB Carson Beck and Kirby Smart somehow both content with close game against Kentucky Wildcats
Georgia nearly upset yet Beck and Smart seem content?
