Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are still likely in shock, coming off what was an extremely disappointing loss to Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday. Georgia lost 28-10 to Ole Miss as the Bulldogs were completely dominated for more than three quarters of the game.
Following the frustrating loss, one Georgia player went viral after he was spotted seemingly celebrating with Ole Miss fans on the field after the game. Georgia defensive back Jake Pope had apparently ran into a childhood friend who he had played with in high school and let excitement get the best of him.
Head coach Kirby Smart, still clearly ticked off at the tough loss and Pope, was asked about his thoughts on the situation. He immediately responded by saying, "What an idiot."
"Yeah, what an idiot. I mean, just stupid. I didn't see it until today. But [Jake Pope]'s embarrassed by it. He's upset about it. That was obviously a childhood friend of his [in the video]. He grew up and played with him there at Buford. He knows him. Hadn't seen him in forever. But just, not real smart. But to be honest with you, I don't have time to waste energy on that…My focus is on Tennessee."
Pope did issue an apology on social media on Monday, saying he "would never celebrate a loss in this program", assuring fans, teammates, and coaches, that his reaction was purely tied to seeing his childhood friend whom he had not seen in a long time.
This is a rather rough look for Kirby Smart, calling his own player an idiot for simply getting excited over surprisingly running into a longtime friend on the football field after the game. Yes, it was a strange look for Pope to seem as though he was celebrating the loss to Ole Miss, but now that the facts are out there, that's clearly not what happened.
Smart is obviously still frustrated about how Saturday's game went (as he should be), but that should not lead someone in his position to call his player an idiot. He tried to play it off after the fact, claiming that he doesn't have time to waste energy on this as he's focused on Tennessee, but little things are clearly bothering him at the moment.
Hopefully Smart and the Bulldogs can put this little incident behind them, re-focus, and get ready for the Vols on Saturday. Josh Heupel and his top five FBS ranked Tennessee defense should give Georgia's struggling offense plenty of problems to overcome this upcoming Saturday that are much bigger than some viral video.
