The transfer portal is set to officially open up on December 9th, but we are already seeing a lost list of talented college football players announce their intentions to enter. As always, the quarterback position is always most heavily tracked, and there is an anticipation that this could be the most chaotic portal movement we have seen.

There are still several quarterbacks who expected to enter the portal, but have not made that intention known yet. Those potential entries are included in this conversation, and some early buzz on destinations, as well as projecting some best fits. This is going to be a hectic, and chaotic several weeks as the 2024 season finishes up.

John Mateer (Washington State) – Oklahoma

This one feels like more a matter of when, and not if. With the Sooners naming former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to the same position with their staff, obviously there is a previous relationship. From the sounds of it, there is heavy interest in Mateer. He’s a very unorthodox player but brings tremendous athleticism to the table at 6-1 and 219 pounds, while also having solid passing skills. It’s a very easy fit.

Conner Weigman (Texas A&M) – Syracuse

After seeing what Syracuse did with former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord this season, it is pretty inviting for other pure pocket passers out there. It was a disastrous season for Weigman, who some considered a potential breakout star this past offseason, and a contender to be one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft class. Weigman becomes a bit of a reclamation project, but one that could be even better than McCord if he can stay healthy.

Kaidon Salter (Liberty) – Ole Miss

When you think of a Lane Kiffin quarterback, you think of a quick decision maker, fast release, and good mobility. That is exactly what Salter brings to the table. Over the course of Salter’s Liberty career, he has thrown for 5,889 yards and 56 touchdowns. The former Tennessee transfer has also rushed for 2,006 yards and 21 more scores on the ground.

Thomas Castellanos (Boston College) – Florida State

The DJ Uiagalelei experiment was a complete failure for Florida State, and now they are forced to hit the transfer portal once again this offseason. Jordan Travis was tremendous for the Seminoles, and Castellanos actually brings a similar style. Their body types are almost exactly the same, and have the athleticism to create outside of structure. His passing might be inconsistent, but Castellanos brings the style that Florida State needs more of.

LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) – Auburn

Some would argue this would be a lateral move, but in the end, money talks. Sellers has not put out his intentions to transfer yet, but there is some smoke behind the scenes. The market is expected to be massive, and there are several destinations that could make sense. Auburn is desperate to find an answer behind center and adding a 6-3, 242-pound dual threat into the Hugh Freeze offense would be exciting.

Noah Fifita (Arizona) – Miami

After an awesome 2023 season, this fall has been a struggle for Fifita and the Arizona offense. With wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan off to the NFL this offseason, expect Fifita to explore options. Miami will be losing Cam Ward, and doesn’t seemingly have an heir apparent ready. Fifita is a very different style compared to Ward, but is a good mover, has a quick release, and underrated arm talent. The latest is that there will be heavy interest from the Hurricanes if Fifita does indeed enter,

Avery Johnson (Kansas State) – Alabama

Johnson’s name has now been mentioned behind the scenes a couple of times. Like Sellers, he has not made transfer intentions known, but there is a feeling he very well could. If he does, there are several teams who will reportedly be interested. Texas A&M is another school to watch due to his obvious relationship with offensive coordinator Colin Klein. There is also an anticipation that Jalen Milroe could leave this offseason, which would leave the need to hit the portal for the Crimson Tide. Johnson brings a similar style to Milroe that could be valued.
