After a rough end to the early signing period for head coach Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers, things have taken a huge step forward with the transfer portal window. The Tigers are looking to continue that momentum this weekend, as they are set to host the top defensive player remaining in the transfer portal in Florida State edge rusher Patrick Payton.

Over the last few weeks, the Tigers have added a ton of talent in the transfer portal.

Mississippi State QB Michael Van Buren
Kentucky WR Barion Brown
Oklahoma WR Nic Anderson
Virginia Tech QB Mansoor Delane
Florida EDGE Jack Pyburn

With the amount of talent that is leaving the Tigers for the NFL Draft, getting this haul of talent from the transfer portal is a huge asset toward trying to make it to the College Football Playoff with second-year starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Payton is a hyper-talented edge rusher with great size and length at 6-5 and 250 lbs. Not only does Payton have the size and athleticism, but he also has a solid production profile. 110 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss and 16 sacks across the last three seasons.

The Tigers' defense struggled in the 2024 season with just 33 sacks across their 12 games with only Bradyn Swinson registering 5.0 or more sacks. The potential addition of Payton, who has a 100% Crystal Ball from 247 Sports, and Pyburn would be a great boost for a Tigers defense that was far too inconsistent in 2024.
