The Michigan Wolverines didn’t have much going for them entering their bowl game matchup against the Texas Longhorns. Their availability report had a list of names over twenty players long out. Their top two pass rushers were out. Their top two running backs were out. They didn’t have a head coach after the Sherrone Moore saga unfolded. The offensive coordinator left midway through their bowl game prep.

Despite all the setbacks they endured, Michigan went toe-to-toe with the 13th-ranked Longhorns, giving as good as they could for all four quarters before ultimately falling 41-27. The fact that Michigan responded and played so well and so tough when they had virtually no reason to is a testament to their belief in interim head coach Biff Poggi and his ability as a coach and leader of men.

Biff Poggi deserves another chance as head coach

Former Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham is taking over to serve as Michigan’s 22nd head coach in program history, and he has already begun assembling his staff. During the bowl game, Whittingham relayed that he had already had “about 90%” of his staff ready to be announced over the weekend, while the remainder would be finalized over next week. Thus, it came as no surprise to find out that Poggi coached his last game with the Wolverines.

For my money, I think Poggi made a strong case for why he should stick arounder under Whittingham, even if the two don’t have a clear history together. It’s evident that the Wolverines rally around Poggi. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that their three best games of the season as a team came when Poggi stepped in as interim head coach for Sherrone Moore. Michigan plays better when Poggi is around, and he clearly has the respect of everyone in the locker room.

Yet, things didn’t work out for him, and it’s understandable why the two sides parted ways. After all, they don’t have any ties to each other, and their respective visions for the team or coaching styles could be completely different. Even with Poggi’s deep ties to the Wolverines, Whittingham wanted his guys, and he should.

It’s the unfortunate reality of the situation for Poggi. I’m sure many around the Michigan program and team will likely miss him when he’s gone. However, after their bowl game performance, he deserves another chance to lead a team or be a key part of an elite program moving forward.
