The Michigan quarterback situation has been a complete disaster throughout the entire 2024 college football season. Surely Sherrone Moore and his coaching staff are going to rectify this situation in future seasons so Wolverines fans never have to endure the embarrassing mess they were forced to watch this season ever again, right?

If you believe the Michigan fans and handful of insiders seemingly certain that five star Bryce Underwood is going to flip from LSU, then things look potentially great. But if we look at every single other piece of reporting? Not so much.

Miller Moss or Transfer Quarterback Options

It was announced this week that Miller Moss would be transferring from USC following head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to start Jayden Maiava moving forward. Immediately following that announcement, multiple reports suggested that Michigan was Moss' top choice of landing spots, leading some to believe that there is already some preliminary agreement in place.

The problem with Moss is that he's just frankly not that good. He's getting benched in favor of another transfer quarterback at USC because of his poor and inconsistent performance. Moss ranks 60th in yards per play, 65th in total adjusted net yards per pass attempt, and 71st in passer rating among FBS starting quarterbacks. That is quite a bit better than what Michigan has been working with this season, but he's certainly not a great college starter.

Moss is of course not going to be the only transfer quarterback available in December, but if he's the first option then Michigan might be in for a rough "bridge" quarterback situation that gets carries them to whoever the team really wants to lead the Wolverines into a bright future.

Bryce Underwood not likely flipping from LSU

Unfortunately, when all evidence is considered, there's almost no reason to believe that five star number one overall recruit Bryce Underwood is going to flip from LSU to Michigan.

Yes, it's been confirmed by multiple sources that there was a huge NIL offer made equal to LSU's package. Yes, there were conflicting reports about Underwood being on the field before the Oregon game. But there's still not been a 100% confirmed official visit with Michigan since Underwood committed to LSU in January.

"He's done nothing but stay loyal to LSU", according to Shea Dixon of On3 Sports (and every insider I've spoken to over the past few weeks). Bryce Underwood apparently still loves LSU and is actually headed to see them play against Alabama this weekend.

Underwood continues to go out of his way to visit LSU and show his commitment every chance he gets. This weekend's rivalry game against Alabama is just yet another example of this. And even if Alabama defeats LSU, there's not much to worry about for the Tigers. Brian Kelly and his coaching staff have now shown they can develop passers with two straight strong quarterbacks in a row in Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier. The same can't be said for Sherrone Moore and company.

Unless something major changes, it seems that the Bryce Underwood excitement is going to fall flat on its face for Michigan.

Quarterbacks with potential upside possibly leaving Michigan

Lastly, James Yoder of the Michigan Football Report shared this week that he believes quarterbacks Alex Orji and (true freshman) Jadyn Davis are possibly leaving for the portal here before the end of the year:

"Alex Orji and Jadyn Davis. I don't think either one of those guys are going to be a part of [the Michigan] program by the end of the year. I think both are going to transfer out."

If that happens, Michigan loses its rushing quarterback package talent in Orji and a high pedigree freshman who was supposed to develop into the face of the program. That would leave the Michigan quarterback plan to a possible transfer (like Miller Moss) and a low probability shot at Bryce Underwood.

It's great that Sherrone Moore and his staff are going all in on Bryce Underwood. As they should. He's the number one quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class. However, there doesn't seem to be a great back up plan if that falls through. If that's the case, Michigan fans might need to brace for a rough short-term future for the Wolverines.
