The Michigan Wolverines have a ton to be excited about when it comes to five star quarterback Bryce Underwood. He's been compared to Cam Newton. He's been lighting up spring practices. The rocket arm and mobility are undeniable. But! Michigan fans might need to pump the brakes on him starting from day one in 2025–at least for now.

Why?

If Michigan fans are honest with themselves, they know how Sherrone Moore works. He spent all last offseason consistently saying that the quarterback competition was wide open. In fact, even when fall camp opened the starting role was apparently still up for grabs to "all five quarterbacks".

Whether that was really true or not is up for debate, but Sherrone Moore loves to see his players earn it. Even in the middle of last season Sherrone Moore was quoted talking about in-season competition that can shuffle the depth chart (not just at quarterback).

So, when Sherrone Moore announced on Friday that he expects the quarterback competition to extend well beyond spring, and that the team won't likely be naming a starting quarterback until a week before the first game, it shouldn't surprise anyone. If anything it should have simply confirmed the suspicions of many Michigan fans who probably saw a statement like this coming.

Sherrone Moore joined JD Pickell on his show for On3 Sports and broke down the quarterback battle in detail (in post below):

"I feel like [the battle] usually carries into fall camp. All the real good [quarterback] battles that I've been a part of–I mean you can say something in spring and it changes. So, we're going to take our time with the process of who that person is. It's so important, right? That person's going to have the ball in their hands every single play and make so many decisions. So, for us it's probably going to go into fall camp. And probably a week before the first game, make a decision , and make the announcement then."

This may sound like Sherrone Moore is just posturing so that he keeps all his quarterbacks in house, but at least for now it seems the Bryce Underwood hype may need the lid put back on it. He's still likely going to become a star whenever he does step foot on the football field for Michigan, but new transfer quarterback Mikey Keene and even technically rising sophomore Jadyn Davis are likely going to be considered "in it" to see some action to open the 2025 football season.

With that said, if Underwood continues to impress to the extent he has this spring there's virtually no way that Sherrone Moore and company will be able to keep him off the field. After putting up with the worst quarterback play in the entire history of the Michigan program last season, fans are ready to see something to get excited about at the helm offensively.
