Champ Monds (1) of Vero Beach looks to pass in the FHSAA Class 7A state championship, Dec. 13, 2025, at Pitbull Stadium in Miami.

With quarterback Teddy Jarrard officially signed with Notre Dame and set to enroll for the 2026 college football season in the summer, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff now have the chance to bring in another talented signal caller in the 2027 recruiting class. There is no question who that top target is right now. Notre Dame is set to make a strong push for Vero Beach (Fla.) High School quarterback Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV, who was originally in the 2028 class before reclassifying this offseason.

While the vibes were positive early on, getting Monds to take the trip to South Bend with an offer under his belt was the next step. According to Steve Wiltfong from Rivals, the Florida native has set a visit to check out Notre Dame, heading to campus on April 18. Monds will also be visiting Florida (March 26), Florida State (March 28), Ohio State (April 4), and Miami (April 11) this spring. It will be a busy few weeks for the talented signal caller.

With CJ Carr back as the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish in 2026, the short-term outlook for Notre Dame is quite strong. There will continue to be a conversation around the future of the position after Carr. With Jarrard, Blake Hebert, and Noah Grubbs also on the roster, there is some good talent in that room. Adding another talent like Monds in the 2027 class, however, would greatly improve your chances of finding another great quarterback whenever Carr does head to the NFL.

It will be interesting to see if Notre Dame can make a strong move with Monds this spring, including on that visit.

Monds’ recruiting background

Monds was previously a member of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying to 2027 recently. Despite that jump, Monds is still rated as a four-star player on the 247 Sports Composite ranking. That rating has the Florida native pegged as the No. 254 overall player, the No.17 quarterback, and the No. player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class. As Monds showcases himself this offseason, he feels like a safe bet to move up those rankings.

A long list of impressive programs has been pursuing Monds. The 6-2, 225-pound signal caller currently holds offers from the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Michigan, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, Auburn, South Carolina, SMU, UNC, Illinois, UCF, Baylor, Wake Forest, and West Virginia, among others.

In five games in 2025, Monds flashed as the main backup to 2026 Florida State athlete signee Efrem White. He managed to complete 45 of 63 passes (71 percent) for 691 yards and seven touchdowns. Monds also scored a touchdown on the ground, while also not throwing an interception. With a very talented Vero Beach team returning next season, you should expect the dynamic signal caller to put together a tremendous year.
