There’s nothing better than a good underdog story. As a collective, we are captivated by stories of players whose accomplishments and performance far exceed their perceived physical talent. That’s the story of former Notre Dame offensive lineman Sam Mustipher, who unfortunately was released by the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.
After a good career in the blue and gold, Mustipher went through the draft process and was ultimately undrafted during the 2019 NFL Draft. Mustipher was able to defy the odds, earning a place on the practice squad his first year. He would then earn a roster spot the next year about half way through the 2020 season.
Despite the naysayers calling for his job, Mustipher would keep a hold of the starting center job for the Chicago Bears for the better part of three seasons. During that time, Mustipher started 40 of the 43 games he played. He would also spend the 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he would also start two games for them.
During his career in South Bend, Mustipher would be a three-year starter for the Fighting Irish. During that stretch, the Maryland native would start in 37 games, while also being named a captain during his final season in 2018. Mustipher’s most impressive stretch as a player came during the 2017 season, where the 6-2, 305-pound offensive lineman helped lead an offense that rushed for 3,503 yards and scored 35 touchdowns. Mustipher did not surrender a quarterback hit or sack that entire season.
Whatever the next step is for Mustipher, he has made Notre Dame fans very proud. He’s a great example of perseverance and drive.
