Michigan football set the whole College Football world on fire this week when it was announced that they were firing head coach Sherrone Moore. After a 9-3 regular season record in just his second year, most were wondering what led to the decision. Less than two days later, everyone knows exactly what led to it as Moore continues to navigate his controversial off-field situation. That saga is ongoing, and is getting worse and worse the more everyone finds out.

While the Moore situation is up in the air currently, the Michigan program is forced to try to pick up the pieces and move forward through controversy. The next objective is to figure out their next head coach. For those who like early hot boards, there are some intriguing candidates being discussed, including Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer. With this search just beginning, Wolverine fans should be ready for some interesting twists and turns to come up.

Mary Kay Cabot, who is a Browns beat writer for Cleveland.com, reported an interesting candidate for the Michigan job. According to her report, current Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is a legitimate candidate for the job. That name is obviously going to be very familiar to Notre Dame fans.

It is uncertain if Rees ends up being in serious consideration for the Browns, but he is certainly an interesting mention. Even though every offense that Rees is in charge of seemingly struggles, he is widely respected in the coaching industry. Whether it happens now or not, it feels like Rees is destined for a head coaching job, most likely happening somewhere on the college level eventually.

Tommy Rees’s Notre Dame background

Rees was a member of the Notre Dame football program as a quarterback from 2010-13 before beginning his coaching career. He initially spent two seasons with the San Diego Chargers franchise and Northwestern on the college level before returning to South Bend under his former head coach, Brian Kelly. Rees would spend six seasons with the Fighting Irish as an assistant coach, serving as quarterback coach and offensive coordinator during that stretch.

After the 2022 college football season, Rees then joined Nick Saban’s final season with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Unfortunately for Rees, he wasn’t retained by the program after Saban retired following his lone season, eventually ending up with the Browns. After spending his first season as the passing game coordinator, Rees gained the offensive coordinator title with the team.
