It wasn’t a massive surprise but former Notre Dame defensive end Aiden Gobaira has officially entered the transfer portal. Gobaira wasn’t on this season’s roster, but he stayed at the school to earn his degree. Now that the academic requirements are almost completed, Gobaira is now ready to find his next football opportunity.
Originally a part of the 2022 recruiting class, Gobaira saw his Notre Dame career set back multiple times by injuries. That included a torn ACL during the 2023 fall camp, which cost him the entirety of last season. Gobaira also did not see game action as a true freshman in 2022, meaning he never saw live action in the blue and gold.
There was so much hype around Gobaira when he came out of Chantilly (Va.) High School. He was considered a four-star recruit by every major recruiting platform. Rivals ranked Gobaira the highest, finishing as the No. 84 overall player and the No. 6 EDGE players in the 2022 recruiting class. The On3 Industry ranking had Gobaira ranked as the No. 177 overall player in the country.
The 6-5, 249-pound pass rusher originally chose the Irish over Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan State, Minnesota, Kentucky, Louisville, Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College, and Duke among others. It was a major victory over Penn State at the time, a program who have had moments of dominance recruiting the state of Virginia.
