This is the difficult part of the NFL preseason, seeing players being waived and released in order to trim down the roster. It is a necessary evil and unfortunately as college football fans, we will see several familiar fans see their dreams put on hold. As a part of the roster cuts, the Houston Texans parted ways with former Notre Dame standouts Troy Pride Jr. and Ben Skowronek.

For Pride, there are some that believe he is a candidate to be a member of the Texans practice squad, which he was last season as well. That comes after a strong preseason for the former Irish standout, putting him firmly on the bubble to make the roster. Unfortunately, that’s not how it worked out.

After a strong career at Notre Dame, Pride was originally a fourth round draft selection by the Carolina Panthers in the 2020 NFL Draft. It was a brief stint with the team, playing just one season, 14 games, and eight starts. During that stint, Pride recorded 42 total tackles and two pass breakups. The South Carolina speedster also spent some time with the Las Vegas Raiders last season, playing in one game.

Skowronek was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was a valuable member of the Rams squad that won Super Bowl LVI during his rookie season. In total he spent three seasons in Los Angeles, hauling in 58 receptions for 575 yards and on touchdowns. “Benny Skow” was better known for his dominance as a blocker, and stellar performance on special teams during his time with the Rams.

It’s uncertain what the next step is for Skowronek. There hasn’t been any whispers of trying to get him on the practice squad, so opportunity elsewhere is more than likely the next step.
