The improbable quest to a national title for Notre Dame, unfortunately, ended with a 34 to 23 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Monday night in the title game. This 14-2 campaign was built off of the Fighting Irish rebounding from a horrific loss to Northern Illinois in the second game of the season, and using that outcome as motivation.
This Notre Dame squad has proven to have adopted the personality of head coach Marcus Freeman, and has carried a chip on their shoulder for the final 14 games of the year. While the season didn’t end quite how they all would have liked, this Irish squad is already utilizing the pain of the loss going into the offseason.
After the game, star wide receiver Jaden Greathouse spoke to the media. The sophomore had hauled in 13 receptions for 233 yards and three touchdowns over the final two games of the season. His breakout was tremendous to see, but it appears he’s already got more impact in mind following the pain he felt on Monday night.
"Really the only thing I can think about is the red and white confetti coming down to the ground. I’m just thinking about how I need to dominate next season."
If you have watched this team over the course of the season, you know that this group has been an extremely resilient one. They have carried a chip on their shoulder, and it doesn’t stop here. You can bet that Ohio State is going to fuel them big time heading into the offseason, especially Greathouse.
"We have been carrying the (Northern Illinois) loss up until this moment. I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t either… I’m ready to get back to work right now. I’ve never felt pain like this. I’m even more eager to get rid of it. I’m going to be in the lab."
I would hate to be a team that is going to see this Irish group early in the 2025 season. They have unfinished business on their mind, and the talented wide receiver portrayed that perfectly. It’s going to be a long several months, but this loss could go a long way toward getting to the mountaintop in 2025.
