Over the last couple of days, we have seen six former Notre Dame players opt for the transfer portal. That included wide receiver Jayden Thomas, who had previously been an important cog in the Irish passing game over the last few seasons. During his four years, Thomas hauled in 64 receptions for 838 yards and seven touchdowns.
At 6-2 and 218 pounds, Thomas was also a foundational piece of the Notre Dame run game during his time in South Bend. He is a tremendous blocker, and a massive frame in the passing game. When healthy, Thomas has been a dependable target.
One of the biggest issues is that Thomas has dealt with a string of durability issues while a member of the Notre Dame team. While he hasn’t had an overly serious injury, the minor issues have derailed his availability and effectiveness during his four years. Those durability issues may have also hurt his overall athleticism as well, profiling more as a possession receiver with not much dynamic ability.
Despite those limitations, there is a strong market for Thomas. Teams need more of this type of size and experience, and the Georgia native has already heard from a long list of notable schools. As it was reported by On3 Transfer Portal Reporter Pete Nakos, Thomas has already set up two visits, one to Auburn and the other to UCLA.
Obviously, Thomas is from the Southeast originally, which should make a school like Auburn pretty attractive. The wide receiver room has undergone a makeover this offseason, and it was desperately needed. With sophomore Cam Coleman returning, the program has already gained portal commitments from Eric Singleton Jr. (Georgia Tech) and Horatio Fields (Wake Forest).
If Thomas ended up selecting UCLA, he would be reunited with former Irish wide receiver Rico Flores Jr. Flores spent the 2023 season with Notre Dame, hauling in 27 receptions for 392 yards and a touchdown. He played in four games with the Bruins last fall, ending with 187 receiving yards and a score.
