There are several keys to watch for the Notre Dame defense on Saturday. There are several advantages on the table, but other key concerns that are worth monitoring. Al Golden and his unit will be tested thoroughly.
Win on the interior
The Georgia Tech offensive line is a rock solid one in the ACC conference. That group is strong and experienced. On the interior, they are led by center Weston Franklin, who is the best overall offensive line. Both guards are strong, but very slow footed. With Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills rounding into form, Notre Dame has the clear athletic advantage on paper. That duo must have a big game. If they do, they have the talent to neutralize the Yellow Jacket running game, and affect the quarterback enough.
No coverage busts
In the passing game, the Yellow Jackets don’t have a ton of space but they have a ton of speed. Eric Singleton Jr. has a track background, and it shows on the field. Malik Rutherford can also run, as can running back Jamal Haynes. Notre Dame has enough speed on defense to stay in proper position, but if they are out of position even slightly, Georgia Tech has the speed to take advantage. The Irish have to be smart, and not hurt themselves in the end.
Eliminate the quarterback in the run game
Georgia Tech has a couple of good running backs, but what makes the running game so dangerous is quarterback Haynes King. He has been a good passer this season, but the impact he has as a runner is what makes this offense so difficult to stop. King could be limited while dealing with an injury, but backup quarterback Zach Pyron is a running threat as well. For Notre Dame to stifle this offense enough, limiting the impact behind center will need to be paramount.
