Notre Dame football currently sits with seven commitments in the 2027 recruiting class, another very solid start for head coach Marcus Freeman. The Fighting Irish now have a busy offseason in front of them with a ton of top targets on the board, unofficial and official visits on the horizon, and a ton of decisions that need to be made.

One of the more interesting targets on the board right now is 2027 Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel defensive back Tavares Harrington, who is an impressive blend of size, movement skills, and versatility. Some programs like Harrington at cornerback, while others prefer him at safety. Freeman and Co. have left the options on the table to see how his body and game develop during the rest of his high school career.

Harrington dropped a bit of news this week when it was announced that he had cut his options down to a top ten list of schools. Notre Dame was included in that top group. The Irish were joined by Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ole Miss, Florida State, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

After some solid early momentum, Notre Dame has faded a bit in the top group. They have plenty of time to recover with an important offseason in front of them. The Irish already hold commitments from Xavier Hasan, Ace Alston, and Khalil Terry in the 2027 class. A versatile piece like Harrington would be a tremendous potential piece for this defense staff, with only one or two spots still open.

Tavares Harrington’s recruiting background

Harrington is currently rated as a top-100 recruit by multiple of the major recruiting platforms. According to the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the Chicago native is pegged as the No. 109 overall player and No. 13 cornerback in the 2027 recruiting class. That ranking also has Harrington sitting as the No. 7 player in the state of Illinois. The city of Chicago is an area that needs to become a more consistent feeder for the Irish moving forward.

It shouldn’t be overly shocking that a long list of impressive suitors has been pursuing Harrington thus far. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Miami, Auburn, Nebraska, Missouri, Washington, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Kansas State, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, UCLA, Louisville, UNC, Illinois, Iowa State, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa, Maryland, Kansas, Cincinnati, Northwestern, and Purdue among several others.

At 6-3 and 175 pounds, Harrington is an outstanding athlete who has the talent to play either cornerback or safety on the college level. Adding this type of versatility is massive for a well-balanced secondary class overall. Mike Mickens was very high on the upside that Harrington brings to the table. It appears that Aaron Henry also values the talented defender.
