Notre Dame football put together arguably their biggest win in over 30 years when they defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 23-10 on Thursday. That Sugar Bowl victory earned the FightingIrish an opportunity to face off against the Penn State Nittany Lions in the college football semifinals of the playoffs. That means they are just one win away from a national championship appearance.

The victory over Georgia can’t be understated. Notre Dame matched up against the SEC champions with all the stigmas surrounding this Irish team, and the perceived lack of speed and depth. During this contest, Notre Dame was the faster team. They also matched the physicality, and made crucial plays in the biggest moments of that contest.

X was a blaze from people who were impressed with the Irish performance, including Fox Sports College Football and NFL Draft analyst Joel Klatt, who is one of the most respected minds in the business. He made a comment admiring the job that head coach Marcus Freeman has done, and simultaneously took a shot at former head coach Brian Kelly.

“Marcus Freeman took a job that Brian Kelly ran from and has elevated it above where he found it…Well done sir! Great leader with an outstanding culture @NDFootball”

When Coach Kelly left he talked about going to a place where he has access to the best, but in reality, his own laziness is what held the roster building back in South Bend. It’s not overly shocking that LSU has to attack the transfer portal so hard this offseason with so many holes on the roster now. Effort is still needed.

Coach Freeman may not be perfect, but clearly he has a great eye for talent and has created tremendous depth on the roster. Things have been trending upward the last 12 games, and he has this Irish team believing that they can win against anyone. That growth, both from a roster and confidence perspective, has been tremendous to watch.

Seeing the growth of this Notre Dame program, and putting together one of their most impressive performances since the early 1990s is allowing the outsiders to really appreciate now. A thank you is necessary for Coach Kelly. If not for him bringing Marcus Freeman to South Bend, and leaving, the Irish wouldn’t be where they are today.
