It doesn’t happen often but with the redshirt rule allowing players to play four games and maintain eligibility, sometimes it makes for some difficult decisions for the players. We have seen that today with Notre Dame cornerback Jaden Mickey deciding to sit out the rest of the season and redshirt. His intentions are to enter the transfer portal after the season and explore other options.

This is a bit of a blow for the Irish at the cornerback position, which is extremely talented but depth is a bit of a concern. In four games, the California native has recorded three total tackles and a pass breakup. Mickey has played in 28 games during his Notre Dame career, finishing his time with the Irish with 23 total tackles, one interception, and three pass breakups.

The junior was in a position battle this offseason with sophomore standout Christian Gray, and unfortunately Mickey was relegated to a backup role. He is a player who provided tremendous depth on the back end, having the ability to play both on the outside and inside at nickel should the team need it.

For those who have followed Mickey and his time with the Notre Dame program, everyone knows that he has been a stellar member of the program, showing nothing but class along the way. The whole Mickey family has suffered loss during these last three years, and the Irish family has continued to rally around him. Irish nation wishes the young man nothing but the best, and hopes he finds nothing but success.
