Notre Dame football dominated the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday night, winning the first ever home playoff game 27-17 in a contest that was not nearly as close as that final score would indicate. Now the Fighting Irish will take on the Georgia Bulldogs on New Year's Day, giving them a chance to change the narrative in big games. The SEC champ is now on the clock.
As is typically the case with Georgia, they bring a lot of talent to the table, but are still very beatable. Notre Dame will need to have their best game of the season, and also need to be as healthy as possible. From the health perspective, the Irish could be getting some big news and a nice early Christmas present.
On X on Saturday, Taliuta Viliamu-Asa, who is the mother of star freshman linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, sent out a nice quote tweet with the assurance that her son should be ready to go against the Bulldogs. It would be a huge piece of news for Notre Dame for a variety of reasons.
Viliamu-Asa, who was considered to be a five-star player by some in the 2024 recruiting class, has been out the last two games due to sprained right knee. In 11 games on the season, Viliamu-Asa has recorded 29 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception. Those raw numbers won’t indicate just how important the California native could be to a championship run.
When you talk about the next great defensive players for the Notre Dame program, Viliamu-Asa would be on the short list for most. The 6-3, 240-pound linebacker is versatile, physical, and has an outstanding feel for the game.
From the short term perspective, the biggest sell for Viliamu-Asa might be as a subpackage player. Before he got injured, he was starting to get more and more reps as a pass rusher on obvious passing situations. The outside pass rush has been a big sporadic, and Viliamu-Asa could provide that group a huge boost down the stretch.
