Notre Dame football is ready for their next challenge on New Year’s Day, a second-round playoff battle against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl. The Fighting Irish have a great opponent in front of them, and a chance to make a massive statement against the SEC champs in a little over a week. They will need to be the best version of themselves to come out on top, or at least as close as possible.
Unfortunately, Notre Dame has suffered a really tough injury blow following their 27-17 win over the Indiana Hoosiers last Friday. Head coach Marcus Freeman announced that senior defensive tackle Rylie Mills will be unavailable for the remainder of the playoffs after suffering a knee injury during the game. Coach Freeman spoke about the injury after the game, and initially seemed positive about his prospects of recovering, but unfortunately, Mills is lost.
The Illinois native is a massive blow for the team, quite literally. The 6-5, 295-pound defender has been outstanding for the Irish down the stretch. In 13 games, Mills has recorded 37 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. Both those tackles for loss and sack numbers were the highest on the team.
This also unfortunately ended the career for Mills, who was a mainstay on the defensive line at both defensive end and defensive tackle over the last several years. In total, he played in 61 contests across his five years. Mills ended his Irish career with 131 total tackles, 26 tackles for loss, and 17 sacks. His 2024 campaign was the best of his career.
If you are looking for some positive news, this frustrating circumstance does make it even more important that the Irish did just get Howard Cross III back from injury. He had been the playmaker of the group, and could help to cushion that blow. They will need Cross to return to form.
Donovan Hinish has also been playing good football for Notre Dame inside, and the team will need to count on him heavily moving forward. Add in Gabriel Rubio and the team does have enough talented bodies to not have a massive drop off. The question is going to center around depth, and whether a player like Armel Mukam can give them any reps to supplement the loss.
