After an early season blunder against Northern Illinois, Notre Dame football was able to recover in a big way, winning 10 straight games to end the 2024 college football regular season. They have now put themselves into a position to host a playoff game in the first round, and could be a tough out for anyone once the postseason begins.
The two biggest drivers of this Fighting Irish team and its success are a stellar defense, and very, very strong running game. The latter has been especially impressive for Notre Dame recently. It seems like every week we are dazzled by something Jeremiyah Love is doing, or the big play ability of Jadarian Price.
As it turns out, the Irish have an argument as the top rushing attack in all of college football this season. In a chart that was put out by Parker Fleming on X recently, he illustrated the efficiency of the run game for the Irish. They are the top team in terms of per-carry average on runs outside of the tackles, while they are right near the top in inside runs as well.
To dumb it down as much as possible, the combination of success both inside and out is the best balance on the FBS level. It has led to an elite rushing attack, and it’s even more impressive when you consider this doesn’t take into account quarterback runs.
Even when you do inject the quarterback run game into the conversation, excluding scrambles, Notre Dame is still in elite company. While some Irish fans are a little frustrated with the overall passing offense, there’s no questioning that the Irish are very good at their offensive identity.
If Notre Dame is able to make a deep playoff run, it’ll be on the shoulders of that strength. Love, Price, quarterback Riley Leonard, and company are going to have to be strong down the stretch.
