Notre Dame football heads into the 2025 college football season with some extremely high expectations. Head coach Marcus Freeman has this Fighting Irish program trending in a great direction, and there are once again national championship goals set for this season. The talent is there, as well as the staff, and resources needed to make that type of jump.
As is the case every season, there are going to be some surprises on both sides of the football. Some of those surprises could be viewed as Hot Takes, and feel far fetched as of today. Here are some of my boldest predictions for this team heading into 2025.
Jaden Greathouse becomes CFB elite
There’s a fun debate raging amongst Notre Dame fans this offseason: Who is going to be the team’s leading receiver, Jaden Greathouse or Malachi Fields? While I believe that Fields is going to be very good in 2025, I’m all in on the Greathouse breakout this season. After hauling in 13 receptions for over 230 yards and three touchdowns his last two games of the 2024 season, I think that the Texas native continues that momentum this fall. The 6-1, 212-pound pass catcher isn’t a burner, but he’s very physical and a technician as a route runner.
Anthonie Knapp’s All-American jump
Charles Jagusah was expected to be a breakout star for the Fighting Irish heading into the season, but unfortunately the arm injury has compromised that. While he didn’t quite have the same fanfare, I also expect Knapp to make a massive jump at left tackle during his sophomore season. We can have the debate about which position Knapp should be playing, but regardless, most should be willing to admit that he’s a talented offensive lineman. There’s a world where the 6-4, 296-pound standout is one of the nation’s best in 2025.
Christian Gray and the Jim Thorpe
Heading into the 2025 season, sophomore cornerback Leonard Moore is going to get a good bit of the attention, both from the media and opposing offenses. Gray was a bit up and down this past season, but the ups were tremendous. He ended the year with three interceptions, nine pass breakups, and one pick six. There were several dropped interceptions as well, and Gray should have had even more big plays. If Gray is able to finish a few more play this season, he has a chance to put up some gaudy numbers, and potentially be in line to be a Jim Thorpe Award finalist.
