Everyone knows that the season has been a frustrating one for the Notre Dame football program, presenting a new twist and turn every week. After a decisive 66-7 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers last weekend, it seemed like there may have been progress. Not just on the field, but with the overall philosophy around the team.

The Irish were the aggressor against Purdue, appearing pissed off and taking things personally. That demeanor is needed for what head coach Marcus Freeman wants to be, a line-driven and physical team.

It’s easy to believe in Coach Freeman, unless you listen to his pregame interviews. Prior to the game against the Miami (OH) RedHawks, he had some extremely troubling comments, which gave flashbacks to the Northern Illinois game where he made a comment about not needing the passing game to create explosive plays.

When asked about the RedHawks team, Coach Freeman was very complimentary of the opponent, but perhaps a little too much. It is especially troubling when you hear him comment on the offensive challenge against the Miami (OH) defense.

“They should be confident coming here… They have a defense that forces you to be methodical, and you have to understand that. We are going to do what they let us do.”

You are the University of Notre Dame, one of the proudest traditions in college sports. Since when did Miami (OH) become your equal? No, they shouldn’t dictate the flow of the football game on either side of the football. The Fighting Irish should, always.

Talent is never going to be an issue under Coach Freeman. He is a tremendous recruiter and continues to attract the belief of recruits, transfer portal players and parents. Everyone wants to believe.

Until the mindset behind the program changes, it isn’t going to get a ton better. You should always dictate the pace of a game. An opponent shouldn’t dictate how you play, or your style. Notre Dame should always be the aggressor, and always carry themselves as such.

No matter how the game finishes up today, the demeanor and distortion of the Irish need to change. Since when did the program become passive and dismissive? There is still a troubling aura around the program, and explains why fans never know what they are going to get each week.
