Notre Dame football expected to host four 5-star recruits for their home battle against Texas A&M, and the Irish need to impress
Notre Dame has an incredibly important recruiting weekend in front of them against the Texas A&M Aggies
Notre Dame football and head coach Marcus Freeman have been on quite a recruiting heater in the 2026 recruiting class. With that group pretty much solidified, the Fighting Irish staff has turned its attention almost fully to the 2027 recruiting class. There have already been some great early returns, and it feels like there is going to be more great momentum on the horizon.
That momentum should continue into this weekend’s matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies. It will be the home opener for the Fighting Irish, and a long list of talented recruits is expected to make the trip to South Bend. That includes several five-star players in the 2027 class, and Notre Dame has the chance to make a great impression against a top-25 team out of the SEC.
Steve Wiltfong, who is the vice president of recruiting at Rivals.com, dropped a piece talking about all the great players that will be in attendance. Among them, the Irish will get a chance to impress Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas offensive tackle Mark Matthews. The 6-6, 270-pound offensive lineman is currently rated as a five-star player on the 247 Sports Composite ranking. He is currently pegged as the No. 7 overall player, No. 2 offensive tackle, and No. 2 player in the state of Florida for the 2027 class.
Matthews is also the teammate of fellow 2027 Irish target Julius Jones Jr. A legacy for Notre Dame, Jones Jr. is a dynamic pass catcher that the team is pushing extremely hard for. Both players are looking forward to the trip, and Matthews had a lot of great things to say about the Irish when talking to Wiltfong.
“I like just the school and the culture behind Notre Dame,” Matthews told Rivals. “Also Coach Rudolph when offering me explained a lot of things to me which made me feel very welcome. I also like Coach Freeman a lot as well.”
Notre Dame will also be welcoming Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity Catholic five-star defensive end DJ Jacobs to campus as well. The 6-5, 220-pound pass rusher has upwards of 40 offers, and is currently rated as the No. 11 overall player in the 2027 class on the Composite ranking. Jacobs also has a personal relationship with Notre Dame 2027 quarterback commit Teddy Jarrard, which they hope plays into their favor.
Speaking of blue-chip players, secondary coach Mike Mickens is going to have a busy weekend. He will be hosting Fort Mill (S.C.) Catawba Ridge cornerback Joshua Dobson, who some consider to be the best defensive back in the entire class. The Composite ranking currently has him pegged as the No. 5 overall player in the class. Dobson will not be an easy grab, but the 6-1, 175-pound cover man has real interest in the Irish early on.
Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco cornerback Jailen Hill will also be checking in on South Bend this weekend. The 6-2, 170-pound defender hails from the same school as current linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, which will hopefully be of some help when the final decision is made. It certainly can’t hurt their chances at all.
Overall, it is going to be a very busy weekend for the Notre Dame staff. Depending on how things go, this could lay the groundwork for a tremendous 2027 recruiting class.
