Notre Dame football made a very intriguing offer this week to 2026 Waxahachie (Texas) High School wide receiver Kohen Brown, who was at the time committed to their hated rival, the USC Trojans. Just two days later, Brown made the decision to decommitment and reopen his recruitment. The timing of everything should tell a good story.
When the offer was made by Mike Brown and the Fighting Irish staff, a lot was made about the talented pass catcher and 2026 running back commit Javian Osborne, who have a personal relationship. It was viewed by many that Notre Dame could make a swift move, and they sure have. They appear to be a very strong suitor right now.
Brown committed to the Trojan back on April 2nd, but his recruitment has remained open even before he opted to decommitment on Friday. He is rated as a three-star player by every major recruiting platform right now. On the On3 Industry ranking, Brown currently sits as the No. 460 overall player, No. 73 wide receiver, and No. 62 player in the state of Texas in the 2026 recruiting class.
Despite those lower rankings, it hasn’t stopped a long list of programs from pursuing the Texas product. Some of Brown’s top offers right now include the Fighting Irish, the Trojans, Ole Miss, Miami, Auburn, Nebraska, TCU, Arkansas, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Boston College, Michigan State, BYU, Cal, Baylor, Arizona, Kansas State, and Kansas among a long list of others.
As a junior in 2024, Brown made a ton of plays for Waxahachie. In 13 games he played, the 5-11, 175-pound speedster managed to haul in 54 receptions for 1,084 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brown has a personal best 100-meter time of 10.69 seconds, and that was on full display this past season.
With several top targets still on the board, this feels like a bit of a reactive move. Regardless, the speed that Brown brings to the table is an easy sell. The Irish will have to close the deal here, but they are trending in a great direction with Brown. The next steps will determine if they can finish this one off.
