After a long and exhaustive search, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame staff finally offered their first 2027 quarterback recruiting targets a few weeks ago. That included Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian star Peyton Houston and Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb fast riser Teddy Jarrard.
With the Fighting Irish keeping such a small quarterback board, it does make their margin for error small, for now at least. Getting in later with such talented players is also a bit risky. Houston is the perfect example, having already been pursued by some prominent programs.
Over the last week or so, Rivals put in a crystal ball for Houston to land with the Oklahoma Sooners. Steve Wiltfong joined the fold of predictions this week, logging an expert prediction for USC to land Houston eventually.
That variance of predictions should show that things may be somewhat up in the air, but Wiltfong typically does a good job with his expert analysis. Regardless, that means that a few teams are over Notre Dame right now.
It wouldn’t be shocking to see Notre Dame eventually expanding the board, even if they believe they are in a great spot with Jarrard. Time will tell the true standing with Houston, but the Fighting Irish are definitely fighting from behind. The Georgia native has talked a lot about trying to make a commitment during his junior season, so that gives a few months to try and make up ground.
Houston is considered very highly across the majority of the major recruiting platforms. He currently sits as the No. 85 overall player and No. 8 quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. They also have him rated as the No. 6 player in the state of Louisiana, a territory known for putting out a lot of talent.
Despite being just 5-11 and 196 pounds, Houston has been pursued by a long list of impressive suitors. Some of his top offers currently include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, LSU, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, USC, Texas A&M, Penn State, Clemson, Florida State, Auburn, Colorado, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, SMU, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, Duke, Arizona, Houston, and Purdue among others.
As a junior, Houston put together an outstanding season for Evangel Christian. Houston managed to throw for 4,480 yards and 38 touchdowns, while throwing just six interceptions and completing 70 percent of his passes. He also added another 690’yatds rushing and six scores on the ground.
