Notre Dame football recruiting is off to a fast start in the 2027 class, especially in the secondary. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish currently hold commitments from Xavier Hasan, Ace Alston, and Khalil Terry. That is already bordering on an elite group.

With one or two spots left available, there are several talented players on the board worth mentioning. One of the most interesting remaining targets is Cincinnati (Ohio) Princeton cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr., who is currently committed to the Indiana Hoosiers. Curt Cignetti’s squad has quickly become a fun in-state rival for Notre Dame.

After Torbert was offered by the Fighting Irish a couple of months ago, interest quickly began to rise. So much so that the Ohio native is making an unofficial visit to South Bend on Wednesday, which was reported by Steve Wiltfong from Rivals and On3. This is a big opportunity for Notre Dame to make a huge impression and push.

As of today, nobody truly knows just how realistic Notre Dame’s chances are with Tolbert. For now, this is just a really interesting step in this recruitment. We will know more about those chances later this week.

Monsanna Torbert Jr.’s recruiting background

Torbert is considered to be a four-star player by the majority of recruiting platforms. The outlier is ESPN, which currently has him pegged as a three-star recruit. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Torbert sits as the No. 184 overall player, the No. 24 cornerback, and the No. 7 player from the state of Ohio for the 2027 recruiting class right now.

There have been some impressive programs that have continued to push for Torbert, even after he committed to Indiana in January. Some of the teams that have offered the Ohio native include the Fighting Irish, the Hoosiers, Michigan, Auburn, Iowa, Kentucky, Pitt, Maryland, Cincinnati, and Purdue, among several others. There are some other programs that are also showing a lot of interest in Torbert this offseason.

As a junior in 2025, Torbert put together a tremendous season for Princeton. In ten games, the 5-10, 158-pound cover man managed to record 40 total tackles, three interceptions, and three more pass breakups. He is also a dual-threat quarterback who threw for 1,791 yards and 26 touchdowns, while also rushing for 450 yards and four more scores. Although he is small, Torbert is a tremendous overall athlete who can do a lot of things for a team.
