There may not have been a more frustrating game for Notre Dame football last season than when they traveled to take on the Louisville Cardinals on October 7th. The Fighting Irish were coming off of a big College Gameday victory over the Duke Blue Devils, and appeared ready to make a run sitting with a 5-1 overall record at the time. Then disaster happened.
Notre Dame seemed flat from the first snap of the football game. Even when potential momentum swings would happen, the Irish never seemed to be able to capitalize on any of them. Louisville was the tougher and more physical team that day, eventually leaving with a 33-20 victory but if you watched that game, it was way more lopsided for the Cardinals.
During that game, Louisville rushed for 185 yards offensively, and held Notre Dame to just 44 yards on 28 carries. The Irish also lost the turnover battle, throwing two interceptions and losing another two fumbles. That game was the antithesis of everything that Marcus Freeman has been trying to build the program on.
On Saturday, Notre Dame is going to welcome Louisville to Notre Dame Stadium for the rematch. In theory, this Irish team should be locked in and have revenge on their minds. If Marcus Freeman and the staff does it right, this team should be coming out with a ton of energy, and fans need to see it.
Like it, love it, or hate it, this Notre Dame team under head coach Marcus Freeman is going to be built off of being strong on both lines. They are going to run the football, play great defense, and be extremely physical. Louisville beat them at their own game last season.
If you are going to play that brand of football, the Irish better come out in this contest with a bad temperament and demeanor. It sounds like that loss has stuck with the Notre Dame players, with some already mentioning their attention to the Cardinals. Could the team have looked past Miami (OH) with this game next on the schedule? We probably will never know, but we should get a better idea this Saturday.
It has been a roller coaster of a 2024 season for the Irish so far. The Notre Dame fans need a clean outing, and a potentially dominant victory against a good football team line Louisville. Channel those bad feelings from last season, and come out with fire on your home field this weekend. Home games have been ugly so far this season for the Irish, and that needs to change on Saturday to really begin building back confidence in this football team.
