What a redemptive arc it has been for Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord. A former highly ranked high school recruit, McCord waited his turn behind CJ Stroud to be the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He earned that job in 2023, did some good things, but McCord didn’t have the full backing from the people around him.
McCord opted to transfer to Syracuse for his final season in 2024, and he excelled with the new surroundings. In 13 games he played, McCord threw for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns, while completing 66 percent of his passes and adding another three scores on the ground. He transformed from Big Ten castoff to one of the very best signal callers in college football this past season.
That transformation has made Syracuse a much more desirable destination for potential talented quarterbacks. That could include former Notre Dame signal caller Steve Angeli, who is visiting the program on Monday. Angeli has a similar background to McCord, which could make for a really solid potential fit.
Angeli entered spring practice for the Fighting Irish for the starting quarterback position. Battling against youngsters Kenny Minchey and CJ Carr, the redshirt junior passer was passed up. After figuring out where he stood, Angeli decided to enter the transfer portal late last week.
There is a pretty strong market for Angeli, who still has two seasons of eligibility remaining. When he has gotten opportunities for the Fighting Irish over the years, Angeli has performed well, passing for 772 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing over 72 percent of his passes and throwing just one interception. The 6-2, 208-pound Angeli is a solid blend of arm talent, and movement skills.
If Angeli does end up transferring to Syracuse, this won’t be the last time Notre Dame fans see him. The Irish are set to take on Syracuse on November 22nd at home, the last home game for the team in the 2025 season. That means that it is Senior Day, which is just yet another added layer to the intrigue for that 11th game of the campaign.
