It’s no secret that Notre Dame football is going to go all in on the wide receiver position in the Transfer Portal this offseason. Unlike last year, the team isn’t going to have to push for volume. Instead, this class is going to be about finding some high-quality contributors.

A familiar face to Irish fans, former Virginia pass catcher Malachi Fields entered the portal on Tuesday. The 6-4, 220-pound wide receiver is the exact type of player the Fighting Irish are looking for, a big-bodied boundary receiver who can win in 1-on-1 situations.

After an injury-plagued 2022 season, Fields has been tremendous the last two years for Virginia. During that stretch, he has hauled in 113 receptions for 1,619 yards and 10 touchdowns. Fields has also averaged over 14 yards per reception during the course of his career, making countless big plays down the field.

A Charlottesville, Virginia native, Fields was originally a member of the 2021 recruiting class for the Cavaliers. Virginia was his only FBS offer at the time for the Monticello standout, but you can bet that won’t be the case for Fields this time around. The market is expected to be massive.

When you look at the Notre Dame wide receiver room heading into the 2025 season, there is a load of talent at wide receiver, but there isn’t a clear-cut top target. Jaden Greathouse, Jordan Faison, as well as some younger players like Cam Williams will be a part of the equation but none of them bring the skill set that Fields possesses.

That impact size is what Mike Denbrock needs playing into the boundary, and has a proven track record making plays. Fields feels like a seamless fit for the Irish, and they need to make it happen no matter the cost.
