The NCAA Transfer Portal opened last week, and over 1,000 college football players from all over the country have already entered in order to explore other options out there. That includes dynamic Troy wide receiver Devonte Ross, who entered on Monday. The market for the speedster promises to be large.

Despite being a smaller pass catcher at 5-11 and 161 pounds, Ross makes up for it big time with long speed and ability to make plays in space. In 12 games this fall, he hauled in 76 receptions for 1,044 yards and 11 touchdowns. Ross also averaged 17 yards per punt return and took one back for another score.

Originally from Cartersville, Georgia, you can bet that there will be a long list of SEC and other Southern programs that will have high interest in Ross who has one year of eligibility remaining. Even if the odds are stacked against them, Notre Dame should be another school that has high interest.

There is a chance that the Irish staff targets two wide receivers during this portal cycle, one that profiles as a big-bodied boundary receiver and the other that brings speed to the table. Obviously Ross fits the latter in that conversation. While the wide receiver group will be talented next year for Notre Dame, there is still an absence of proven playmakers and limited speed to work with.

One other interesting thing to consider is that Caleb Davis, who is now the Director of Scouting for Notre Dame, should have deep knowledge of Ross. Before returning to the Irish a few months ago, Davis spent some time with the Troy program as the Director of Player Personnel. He had left South Bend this offseason to work under former Irish offensive coordinator Gerad Parker.

Could Ross reunite with Davis up north? That is something to monitor closely.
