In the 2026 recruiting class, Notre Dame had some great early standing with several talented safeties. Mike Mickens and the Irish staff are, however, still waiting for its first safety commitment. Spring visits will be something worth keeping a close eye on.

One player that Notre Dame has been high on for some time is Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy star Zech Fort. Things looked to be in a good place, but then Fort decided to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs back on January 30th. Despite that, the Fighting Irish staff has not let up in their pursuit.

The Georgia commit will be taking another unofficial visit to South Bend this weekend on March 29th. Getting Fort back on campus is notable. Notre Dame has a chance to make a statement while continuing their strong relationship. If Fort does ever back off of his commitment in favor of the Irish, this upcoming visit could be a major reason why.

Fort is considered to be one of the very best safeties in the 2026 recruiting class. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 104 overall player, No. 9 safety, and No. 12 player in the state of Florida in the class. He ranks similarly on the 247Sports Composite ranking, currently sitting as the No. 116 overall player.

Notre Dame isn’t the only prominent program that continues to pursue Fort despite his Georgia commitment. He has a long list of impressive offers, including Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, Oregon, Oklahoma, USC, LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Florida State, Auburn, and Nebraska among many others.

As a junior, Fort continued to be an integral member of the Ascender defense. Fort played in seven games, managing to collect 36 total tackles, one interception, one pass breakup, and four tackles for loss. The 5-10, 190-pound safety brings a lot of versatility on the back end.
