Notre Dame’s recruiting focus has shifted quickly after losing out on elite running back Kemon Spell to the Georgia Bulldogs
There is a new top Notre Dame running back target to know after Kemon Spell committed to Georgia.
Notre Dame football received some tough news recently when it was announced that 2027 McKeesport (Pa.) High School five-star running back Kemon Spell was committing to the Georgia Bulldogs. When the 5-11, 210-pound runner decommitted from the Penn State Nittany Lions following the firing of head coach James Franklin, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish were expected to be a tough team to beat. A big reason for that was Spell’s relationship with Notre Dame running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider.
Unfortunately for the Irish staff, it didn’t work out that way. They had some positive early momentum but faded over the last several weeks. While there is still a long time until National Signing Day, it is going to be unlikely for Notre Dame to flip Spell. Their attention has already turned to some other talented options on the board. That includes four-star Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes running back David Segarra III, a player that Irish fans need to be familiar with quickly.
Notre Dame was out to visit Segarra recently, and he will be heading to South Bend for the first time this spring. While there are certainly some other talented running back targets to know on the board, including Arizona star Noah Roberts, Segarra is a player that Seider and the offensive staff are very high on. Getting him on campus is a great step. From there, it’ll be interesting to see if this Notre Dame staff can close the deal.
David Segarra’s recruiting background
Outside of Rivals, who has Segarra rated as a three-star player currently, the South Carolina native is pegged as a four-star by the other two major platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Segarra is currently rated as the No. 244 overall player, the No. 18 running back, and the No. 4 player from the state of South Carolina for the 2027 recruiting class.
While Segarra’s recruiting rankings are a bit all over the place, he has been in heavy demand by some of the top programs in all of college football. Some of the top offers for the South Carolina star include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Clemson, Indiana, Florida State, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Boston College, UCF, and Stanford, among others.
As a junior this past season, Segarra put together a tremendous season for Byrnes. In 11 games played, the 5-10, 200-pound runner managed to rush for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns, while averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Segarra also hauled in 19 receptions for 198 yards and four more scores. The South Carolina standout is an impressive combination of explosiveness and vision.
